Something I kind of like about Eyeshield is that the series isn't afraid to take the camera and point it at places other than the Devil Bats。 And not just to show the other games -- it gives them the space and attention to develop them as people, even off the field。We start off this volume with the Devil Bats watching two of the powerhouse teams in their area -- the previously mentioned White Knights and the Wild Wild Gunman。 It's partly to teach us a new aspect of football -- routes, in this ca Something I kind of like about Eyeshield is that the series isn't afraid to take the camera and point it at places other than the Devil Bats。 And not just to show the other games -- it gives them the space and attention to develop them as people, even off the field。We start off this volume with the Devil Bats watching two of the powerhouse teams in their area -- the previously mentioned White Knights and the Wild Wild Gunman。 It's partly to teach us a new aspect of football -- routes, in this case。 Seibu has a receiver who always runs his routes perfectly, while our Devil Bats have never even HEARD of routes。 (A fact that gives us a bit of fun and shines a light on why Hiruma maybe let bookworm Yukimitsu on the team -- alone of the offensive players, he not only embraces the challenge of learning routes, but also learns them fairly quickly, without Hiruma needing to force the issue。) We also meet The Kid, a shotgun quarterback with a "quick draw" throwing style and a life outlook that centers on never having any hopes or expectations。 But once this game is over, we refocus on Sakuraba, the received from the white Knights who got injured earlier after colliding with Eyeshield 21。 The stuff with him and the kid who shares his hospital room is actually pretty cute。 :)And the second half of this book deals with the next Devil Bats game。 See, a U。S。 team is coming to play an exhibition game, and Hiruma wants the Devil Bats to be their opponent。 The problem is, another team has been chosen based on their size (and therefore, their likely ability to hold up to a U。S。 football team)。 but Hiruma isn't the sort to accept that and comes up with a way to compete with the other team -- the Sphinxes -- for the right to play the U。S。 team。With as small a team as the Devil Bats have, everyone has to contribute to do well。 But the focus in this game is on the line -- and specifically Jumonji, Kuroki and Togano, or the "Hah brothers" -- three guys who got blackmailed into the team after trying to bully Sena very early on。 Until now, they've mostly been going along with things because of the blackmail, and have more or less existed as a unit -- a fact lampshaded by the fact that the trio even share a locker in their new, larger locker room (though there's an in-universe reason for that as well)。 But in this volume, things kind of come to a head and the trio have to decide if they want to run, or if they are really going to embrace being Devil Bats。 Which way will their pride lead? 。。。more

A trio of delinquents, Sena's original bullies are blackmailed into joining the American football club but along the way, discover their desire to win。 Sounds like a plot for the next Mighty Ducks reboot but this is basically one of the plots of this manga。 Somehow, it works, especially with the comedy and exaggerated facial artwork。 It's a lot of fun to read。 A trio of delinquents, Sena's original bullies are blackmailed into joining the American football club but along the way, discover their desire to win。 Sounds like a plot for the next Mighty Ducks reboot but this is basically one of the plots of this manga。 Somehow, it works, especially with the comedy and exaggerated facial artwork。 It's a lot of fun to read。 。。。more

The Devilbats watch the Ojo White Knights win against the Seibu Wild Gunmen, though it seems to be because their receiver made a mistake and drank too much water。 (You really need to watch commands around a guy who takes everything literally。) Hiruma jumps into action when he finds out that an American team is supposed to play a Japanese team, and after several hacking attempts result in getting the Devilbats to receive the invitation, the team they took it from is angry。 The Taiyo Sphinx--a tea The Devilbats watch the Ojo White Knights win against the Seibu Wild Gunmen, though it seems to be because their receiver made a mistake and drank too much water。 (You really need to watch commands around a guy who takes everything literally。) Hiruma jumps into action when he finds out that an American team is supposed to play a Japanese team, and after several hacking attempts result in getting the Devilbats to receive the invitation, the team they took it from is angry。 The Taiyo Sphinx--a team they normally wouldn't play since it's not in their region--was supposed to be the Aliens' opponent, and they agree to fight it out on the football field。 This team is known for their incredibly powerful line--just like their team name, the Sphinx, this Ancient Egypt-inspired team is built as strong as a pyramid。 Their pharaoh-like quarterback, Harao, has never been tackled because no one can get through the line。 Strong, big Kurita can't handle five guys just like him at once, and little Komusubi can hold his own surprisingly well but he's still just one guy。 With their three linemen the Hah brothers quitting, they're not sure how they'll win, but when the guys come back to prove their strength after getting disgraced by Taiyo's lineman Banba, they want revenge。I saw the anime before reading the manga and I can't help but hear those drums when I read this one。 The pyramid line is incredible--you can feel the intimidation that streams off them--and I love watching the Deimon line go against them。 It's really fun also to see how the team has to focus on different problem spots against each team。 In the match against Ojo, it was a battle of runners。 In this one, it's the line。 Hiruma's insults to enrage the other team's line and make them sloppy are hilarious too。 And the way Hiruma gets his dirty fingers into everything is just amazing。 Seeing the Hah brothers redeem themselves somewhat while not losing their gruff exterior entirely is great as well。 。。。more

In this volume we get a different matchup as the Devilbats go as guests to watch a their rival White Knights go up against the Gunslingers。 Both teams are considered two of the top in Japan。 The second half of the manga focuses on one of the star receivers of the White Knights and concludes with The Devilbats starting their face off against the mysterious Sphinx team for the right to play a prestigious American team in an exhibition game。This was a fun volume with a balanced dose of football act In this volume we get a different matchup as the Devilbats go as guests to watch a their rival White Knights go up against the Gunslingers。 Both teams are considered two of the top in Japan。 The second half of the manga focuses on one of the star receivers of the White Knights and concludes with The Devilbats starting their face off against the mysterious Sphinx team for the right to play a prestigious American team in an exhibition game。This was a fun volume with a balanced dose of football action and new character development that flushes out our rival team even more than just their star player。 The development of the shotgun offense for the aptly name Gunslingers (in addition to their aloof charismatic quarterback) was another great move in explaining the grand strategy and scheming of gridiron football。 I bet the Bats will face this team in the future, but when has me wanting to keep reading long run。 The next volume also looks promising as the Sphinx team appears to be the toughest and most interesting opponent the Devilbats have come up against yet。 Their already touting a killer offensive/defensive line! Yay for football geekery。 3 stars。 。。。more
